Stephen, Skipper & co-owner of SailandStay
Stephen has Viking blood running through his veins, from his mother´s ancestral home in the Shetland Isles. A former business owner in the UK, Stephen left the "rat race" and moved to sunny Spain to pursue his love of the sea and set up SailandStay in 2008. Stephen´s early sailing experience was on the challenging East Coast of England, and he has since sailed over 20,000 nautical miles in many different parts of the World, including the Windward Islands, Australia, the Baltic Sea, and also he joined a sailing expedition across the Arctic Ocean to Svalbard @ latitude 75º North.
Mike, Skipper & co-owner of SailandStay
Raised in Peru and the Far East, and educated in Yorkshire and Durham University, Mike moved to live in Spain and El Ferrer in 2001. A former director of First Choice (Holidays), as well as owning his own mail order company in the UK, Mike is a keen skier, organic winemaker and marathon runner.
A snowbird who flew south from Gothenberg, Sweden, Bjorn moved to southern Spain and now has a permanent tan ! Friendly, witty with a dry sense of humour, but always professional, Bjorn is fluent in English, and of course can communicate in most of the northern European languages that no-one else understands !! (Swedish, Norwegian & Danish).
Born in Guernsey, Ken has always been around boats and likens himself to "Captain Jack Sparrow". He competed for 25 years racing beach catamarans, became the yacht club commodore and has also sailed extensively in the Caribbean & Mediterranean. A highly experienced and successful racer, who keeps a constant eye on the sail trim to get the maximum performance out of "Optimist of London II"
Tijs, resident guitarist
We are very proud and privileged to have "Bring" (as he is known ... a clone of Brad Pitt & Sting) play onboard during the summer months. In 2013, Tijs was voted the 2nd best solo guitarrist in Holland and if you are lucky you will catch him playing onboard during your cruise ... but you won´t catch him running ... Tijs is also a national champion runner and can be seen regularly at full speed along the beach at La Herradura.
Maggie, 1st mate & co-owner of SailandStay
Maggie is Stephen´s wife and also a fellow Viking, a descendant of the Stewart clan in the Highlands of Scotland (who is often seen sporting a kilt !) Maggie shares Stephen´s passion for the sea and all things nautical, she helms (steers the boat) as well as being in charge of the galley onboard, which is her main domain. A cordon bleu masterchef, Maggie surprises our guests with culinary delights on our longer extended cruises. Always cheerful, Maggie makes sure all our guests are well looked after, especially the younger shipmates.
Lucy, 1st mate & co-owner of SailandStay
A former primary school teacher, Lucy runs, cycles, climbs, lifts weights and generally gets stuck into everything onboard. She crews with Mike, as well as giving all onboard an encouraging word and a ready smile!
Anna, 1st mate
Bjorn´s wife Anna, also a snowbird from Sweden, brings a sense of glamour to the otherwise scurvy-ridden scallowags onboard. Fluent in Spanish and a wonder in the galley, Anna loves to see people happy onboard and nothing is too much trouble for her to make sure everyone enjoys themselves.
Diana, 1st mate
Wife to skipper Ken, Diana is a true sun worshipper who adores the climate and the sailing in Spain. Together they make a great team and have sailed in Kenya, Turkey, Greece & the Caribbean. Fun, bubbly and very attentive, Diana was also a yacht club commodore and works tirelessly to help make your day a day to remember.
Albert, resident guitarist
A virtuoso, classically trained guitarist, Albert is a very famous local musician from Holland and plays onboard at weekends accompanied by his beautiful Cuban singing partner, Deya, who also helps with the crewing. Everyone loves him and he is so good, he should be playing in the concert hall that bears his name, the Royal Albert Hall.
